Medieval pagan black metal band Runespell are set to release a new full length album in August, with ‘Vigirdr Fields’ offering itself up as the advance track that heralds its arrival. This album marks a new era for the band, with main man Nightwolf now joined on keyboards by Irrwycht of bands including Baxaxaxa, Grabunhold and Imha Tarikat, and Basilysk on drums and vocals, from many projects most recently Pestilential Shadows, The Slow Death and Temple Nightside. Runespell already delivered albums on an epic scale, but the extra hands and visions add to the hallucinatory experience with even more vivid sound – showcased here, on what will be the closing track, which I don’t tend to like as previews, because it feels a little like a spoiler, but there is so much going on in this album before it that this track is a classic teaser that doesn’t give it all away.
